Biographical notes

Approx birth date and place for Wallace is from 1861 Census return. It is assumed that he was named after his grandfather Wallace Allan. No record of his birth has been found in the Dumfriess-shire OPR.

The register entry for his marriage is somewhat uncertain as the nearest name is Wolley Smith (a corruption of Wallace Smith?) in the Salford entries for April-June 1863. The corresponding entry is for Elizabeth Brandish - the forename matching that recorded in the 1871 Census. This would also fit with the birth of their first child, Thomas, in 1864. Elizabeth would have been aged about 20 at the time of her marriage.

Wallace is listed in the 1871 Census living with his partner Elizabeth and family in Regent Road (near to Wallace's parents), Salford. Wallace Smith (Head), age 28, born in Scotland, Tobacco Spinner [maker of cigars], Elizabeth Smith (Wife), age 28, born in Salford, Thomas Smith (Son), age 7, Wallace Smith (Son), age 5, Alexander Smith (Son), age 3, and Ellen Smith (Daughter), age 1.
