The birth of John is apparently recorded in the Stanstead Abbotts registers which record his christening on the 5 June 1808 to parents William Tilcok and Sarah.

He apparently married Sarah Webster in Thundridge on the 14 May 1836, and the family is recorded in the 1841 Census living at the Bell Inn, Widford where John is apparently the landlord; John Tillcock (33), victullar [VICTUALER - seller of food/drink], y [born in Herts.]; Sarah Tillcock (34), n [not born in Herts.]; William Tillcock (4), y [born in Herts.]; George Tillcock (2), y [born in Herts.].
