Biographical notes

James can be traced in the 1851 and 1861 Census returns living with the rest of the family in Wallacetown In the 1861 Census he is working as a Waggon Driver.

In the 1871 Census he is listed as born in St Quivox, aged 26, a Carter, living as a lodger at 28 Scotland Street, Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanarkshire.

His death certificate records the cause of death as strangulation by hanging. There is no other clue as to the circumstances in which he met his death. The certificate records his occupation as Cartage Contractors Carter. His father is given as James Pettigrew Carter (Master) deceased and his mother as Agnes Pettigrew maiden surname Kennedy. The name of his wife is given as Jane Taylor.
