Pettigrew, The other day at Kew [Gardens] I saw a beautiful small leaved bay which I don't think we have got. It was growing up against a south wall & I think it would do very well at St Fagans. It is called "Umbellularia californica". Will you get it. It has a lovely pointed leaf and grows in

thick tufts. There is a beautiful plant here with great blue flowers. I think it is of Echium family but I can't quite make out which as the Gard[e]ner here does not know, - it looks something like this [sketch] the spike is composed of a lot of small flowers the same sort of blue as

the italian Anchusa. It is the finest blue flower I've ever seen & makes a great show. It might be Echium plantagineum do you know it & Do you think it would do well at Saint Fagans[?] It grows about 3 or 4ft. high here. On Thursday I am going to Florence, Torre di Bellosguardo, so you might write me a line there to say you
