Letter written by Agnes McLelland Pettigrew (nee Allan), to her son William Wallace Pettigrew on the 17th January 1889. Written in pen and ink on four folded sheets of paper. WW Pettigrew was lodging in Kew whilst pursuing his studies at the Botanic Gardens. Agnes describes her current state of health & reports her progress on making a shirt for WWP. She recommends some medicine for his stomach complaint and exhorts him to eat properly. She tells him that the family will bear any expenses incurred to be paid back when he is eventually in a position to do so. Mention is also made of WWP's fiance Ruth McConochie and of possible settlements after the recent death of her father. She refers to the beginning of the new school term for Agnes and Andrew (WWP's siblings), and how expensive the required new books are. Various other family acquaintances and family anecdotes are discussed.
