Biographical notesThe marriage record for John Allan and Jean Templeton has not been traced and neither has the birth record for their son Francis. Most of the information derives from the 1851 Census entry where they are listed as living at High Street East, Irvine. John Allan Head (64), Shoemaker Journeyman, born Wigtownshire - Stranraer. His wife Jean (50), born Ayrshire - Kilmaurs. His son Francis (24, unmarried), Shoemaker Journeyman, born Ayrshire - Irvine By the 1861 Census, John had died (probably before Civil registration in 1855 as no statutory record of his death has been traced). Jean (enumerated as Jane) Allan is recorded as a Widow, aged 60, born Kilmaurs Ayrshire, a Housekeeper living with her widowed niece Agnes Baillie (38), Worsted Weaver, born Kilmaurs, and her daughter Jane aged 8 (also born Kilmaurs). Additional information relating to Jeans parents has been derived from her death certificate. She died on 27 May 1863 (aged 62) at Kilmaurs. After the 1851 Census, Francis Allan moved to Northamptonshire, married Ann Solomon, and is recorded in the 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 Census records. He died in Northamptonshire in 1909 (actual certificate not examined). |
