Biographical notes

This family first appear in the 1851 Census living in Content Street (Wallacetown). James is carrying on the family tradition and is a Carpet Weaver. At the time of the Census they had two children; Flora (4), and John (1). Statutory Death Register returns show that they had a son named James in 1852 who died at the age of 2 in 1855.

The 1861 Census sees them still in Content Street with Flora (14) and John (10). Another daughter, Janet, was born in 1861 (after the Census), but this child also died young in 1863.

The family can be traced in the 1871 Census, and Janet died in 1885 aged 62. On the death certificate James is described as a Janitor and the address is Academy Lodge, Ayr. James died in 1894 aged 70.
