Biographical notes

In the 1891 Census the couple are living with Laura's sister, Mary Ann Barry, the proprietor of Barry's Hotel in Cardiff. In the 1901 Census, John and Laura are proprietors of the Royal Pier Hotel, Birnbeck Road, Weston super Mare. Subsequent planning records preserved at Somerset Archive and Record Service include a 'Plan of extensions to Royal Pier Hotel (approved plans of 1931 and amended plan of 1935)' for 'For Richard J S Crowe, owner', indicating that by this time, ownership of the hotel had passed to their son Richard John Southwell Crowe.
