BIRTH; Altho birth at Ayr says parents; Hugh Johnston & Ann Johnston, his Death Certificate states his fathers name is Alexander DEATH; HUGH JOHNSTONE,Master Baker, Married, died aged 40 yrs at Ayr Hospital, on 5th June 1858 of Peritonitis, 3 days, Son of Alexander Johnston, Labourer, dec, & Ann Johnston, maiden name, Johnston, dec. Informant; Archibald Pettigrew, Brother in law See also info for his sister Sarah where there is a similar confusion between Hugh and Alexander as the father's name. Scotlands People website give the christening date. Birth date from LDS website. Mary Mansell Mansell or Manson? Need to check this!! At 1851 Census, Mrs Johnston was 26yrs & born Edinburgh. Her death Certificate has Maidenname MANSON,whereas the Death Certificate of son, Hugh Johnstone, names her as Maiden name MANSELL. The Mary Manson that Ive entered, dtr of Robert Manson & Mary Todd, is the ONLY entry that Ive so far found that could possibly fit. b11/07/1824 Daughter Sarah Johnstone b 7/07/1846 (opr ayr 578/11 fr 80) 1851 Census:Content Street,Wallacetown, Ayr, aged 4yrs. In household of Sarah Johnstone or Pettigrew, her aunt, & Archibald Pettigrew. Also present, grandmother, Ann Johnston, now a widow Son Hugh Johnstone b 18/3/1848 - d 1918 Railway Station Master. 1861 Census: Lodging at Content Street,Ayr, with Aunt Sarah & Uncle Archibald Pettigrew. Father, Hugh, died in 1858 (Altho his mother didnt die until 1874). Census Record says born Hamilton, but think that was his mother. Hher death record in Glasgow very sparse with details.
