The family appears in the 1881 Census living at Cheetham in Lancashire (Thomas is a bootmaker), and in the 1891 census living at Broughton, Salford with Thomas's widowed mother Margaret living with them. His daughter Sarah Smith is named as the informant on her grandmother's death certificate.
