Biographical notes

Apart from the Statutory Register entry, there is a record of his birth in the St Quivox Parish Register. He has not been located in the 1871 Census, but he is apparently listed in the 1881 Census as Archibald Pettigrew, relationship pupil, age 11, born Ayr, Ayrshire. As Archibald was illegitimate and his mother died in 1869, it is inferred that he is in an orphanage. Need to see original image of Census return to verify this. Not located in 1891 or 1901 Census records.
