Biographical notes

First listed in the 1841 Census return, aged 4, living with her parents James and Mary Winch in Burnham, Bucks.

In the 1851 Census she is recorded as Mary A, Winch, 14, a visitor at Brickfield House in Burnham Bucks., with the family of Richard Beckley (a Beer House Keeper) and his wife Emily and two daughters.

The 1861 Census sees Mary Ann living in Yorkshire at Wentworth Woodhouse; Mary Ann Winch, Un[married], 24, House Servant and Kitchen Maid, Bucks Burnham. She was apparently employed by the family of the Right Honourable Earl Fitzwilliam at Wentworth House.

In 1871 she has moved back south and is working for the family of John Wodehouse Earl of Kimberley, at 48 Bryanston Square, St Marylebone; Mary Ann Winch, Servant, Un[married], 34, Cook and Housekeeper servant, Bucks Burnham.

In 1881 she is working on the Poles Estate at Downfield Farm, Thundridge in Hertfordshire; Mary Ann Winch, Servant, Unmarried, 44, Housekeeper, Bucks Burnham.

In the second quarter of 1884 she married Isaac Hill - she was 47 whilst he was 75 and a widower of 1 year. They are listed in the 1891 Census living at 5 Farquar Street, Hertford; Isaac Hill, Head, M[arried], 81, living on own means, Somerset Spaxton; Mary A. Hill, Wife, M[arried], 54, living on own means, Bucks Burnham

After the death of Isaac in 1893, Mary Ann is apparently listed as a Widow in the 1901 Census, aged 62, living on own means, born in Buck Boernham [Burnham Buckinghamshire] and living in Church Road, Hertford.

Death probably registered in 1904 at Hertford, recorded age of 67 which matches 1837 year of birth.
