Family first appears in the 1871 Census living at Wades Mill, Standon, Hertfordshire; George Hill, Head, Marr, 24 Carpenter, Surrey Clapham; Annie M. Hill, Wife, Marr, 20, Herts Thundridge; Jessie Hill, Daughter, 3, Scholar, Herts Thundridge; Horace Hill, Son, 1, Herts Thundridge; Sarah J. Hill, Daughter, 4 months, Herts Standon. Looks as if Jessie Hill was illigitimate, born a year before the couple were married.

In the 1881 census they appear to be living at the same address in Standon, Herts; George H.[enry] Hill, Head, Marr, 32, Carpenter, Surrey Clapham; Annie M. Hill, Wife, Marr, 30, Herts Thundridge; Jessie Hill, Daughter, 13, Scholar, Herts Thundridge; Sarah J. Hill, Daughter, 10, Scholar, Herts Standon; Annie M.[aria], Daughter, 6, Scholar, Herts Standon; Harry G.[eorge], Son, 5, Scholar, Herts Standon; Lucy Hill, Daughter, 3, Scholar, Herts Standon; Barbara Hill, Daughter, 1, Herts Standon; Samuel E.[dward] Hill, Son, 2 months, Herts Standon. Sons Horace, aged 11, and Walter, were staying with their grandfather Sampson Tillcock, on the night of the Census.

The 1891 Census sees little change with the family still at the same address at Wadesmill; Geo Henry Hill, Head, married, 43, Carpenter, Surrey Balham; Annie Maria Hill, Wife, Married, 40, Herts Thundridge; Lucy Hill, Daughter, 13, Scholar, Herts Standon; Barbara Hill, Daughter, 11, Scholar, Herts Standon; Samuel Edward Hill, Son, 10, Scholar, Herts Standon; Alfred Hill, 8, Scholar, Herts Standon.

In the 1901 Census the family is greatly reduced (children moved away), and they are living in Barwick Cottage, Standon; George Henry Hill, Head, married, 53, Carpenter, Surrey Streatham; Annie Marie Hill, Wife, married, 50, Herts Wadesmill; Samuel E. Hill, Son, S[ingle], 20, Bricklayer, Herts Wadesmill; Alfred Hill, Son, S[ingle], 18, General Labourer, Herts Wadesmill.
