Biographical notesCouple first recorded in the 1841 Census on the same page but not apparently living together as Ann is recorded with her maiden surname of Evans. It seems that they had already had one child (William born in 1839 at Tooting), but he is not listed with them in the 1841 Census (but is listed with them in the 1851 census). They are recorded living at Obligation Row in Upper Tooting, Surrey; Ann Evans, 25, F[emale] S[ervant], no [not born in Surrey]; Isaac Hill, 30, Gardener, no [not born in Surrey]. Not clear who their employer is from the Census. After their marriage on the 13 March 1842 the couple are recorded in the 1851 Census living on the Norbury Park Estate, Mickleham, owned by Thomas Grissell; Isac Hill, Head married, 42, Gardener, Somerset Sharton [mis-transcription of Spaxton]; Ann Hill, Wife, Married, 42, Surrey Dulwich; William Hill, Son, 12, Scholar, Surrey Tooting; Ellen Hill, Daughter, 8, Scholar, Surrey Tooting; Samuel Hill, Son, 8, Scholar, Surrey Tooting; Frederick Hill, Son, 6, Scholar, Surrey Tooting; George Hill, Son, 5, Scholar, Surrey Tooting; Charles Hill, Son, 1 at home, Surrey Mickleham. In the 1861 Census the family are still on the Norbury Park Estate, living in the Gardener's Cottage; Isaac Hill, Head, Married, 57, Gardener, Somerset Spaxton; Ann Hill, Wife, Married, 57, Surrey Dulwich; Samuel Hill, Son, Un[married], 18, Apprentice Carpenter, Surrey Tooting; Ellen Hill, Daughter, Un[married], 18, Surrey Tooting; Frederick Hill, Son, Un[married], 16, Gardener, Surrey Tooting; George Hill, Son, 14, Scholar, Surrey Tooting. Charles is absent (he would have been 11), and it looks as if he died in 1852 In 1871 the family have moved to Thundridge in Hertfordshire and are living in the Poles Estate in the Gardener's House; Isaac Hill, Head, Married, 61, Gardener, Somerset Spaxton; Annie [Ann] Hill, Wife, Married, 61, Gardener, Surrey Clapton; Samuel Hill, Son, Unmarried, 28, Carpenter, Surrey Tooting; Ellen Hill, Daughter, Unmarried, 28, Carpenter, Surrey Tooting; Frederick Hill, Son, [occupation not deciphered]. In 1881 Ann and Isaac are living on their own on the Poles Estate still in the Gardener's House. Mary Ann Winch who married Isaac after the death of Ann, is also working on the Estate as Housekeeper. The 1881 Census entry is; Isaac Hill, Head, Married, 71, Head Gardener, Somerset Spaxton; Ann Hill, Wife, Married, 71, Surrey Dulwich. Ann died in 1883 and Isaac married Mary Ann Winch in 1884. |
