Biographical notesMarriage certificate records the marriage on 7 January 1845 between Hannah Dawe, age 29, Spinster, father James Dawe, Mason; and John Callicott, age 22, Tailor, father unknown (as entered on certificate), in the Parish Church at Pitminster.. Family in 1851 Census, living in Upper High Street, Taunton (St Mary Magdalene). John Callicott, Head, Married, age, 33, Tailor (Master Hosier), born Somerset, Taunton St Mary Hannah Callicott, Wife, Married, age 33, born Somerset, Trull Elizabeth Louisa Callicott, Daughter, age 4, Scholar, born Somerset, Wilton Sarah Jane Callicott, Daughter, age 2, Scholar, born Somerset, Taunton St Mary William James Callicott, Son, age 3 months, born Somerset, Taunton St Mary Matilda Daw, Daughter in Law, age 15, unmarried, Working at the Silk Factory, born Somerset, Trull Emma Daw, Daughter in Law, age 10, at home, born Clifton, Gloucester Last two children have the curious relationship of 'daughter in law' to John Callicott. The Trull registers record the birth of Matilda Daw to Hannah (no father named) strongly indicative of an illigitimate birth. More information is required to verify if Emma Dawe was also illegitimate. It may be significant that the relationship is that of 'daughter in law' rather than 'step daughter'. The BMD registers also record the birth of Grace Callicott in the first quarter of 1853, Taunton. No further record has been found which may suggest that she may have died in infancy although there is no corresponding statutory death entry. In the 1861 Census the family are living in Temple Street in the district of St Mary Redcliff in Bristol. Strangely John Callicott is not listed. The names are Hannah Callicott (44), Head, Marr. Tailoress born Somerset, Pitminster; Emma Dawe, Dau. (20), Un. Tailoress] born Bristol; Jane Callicott, Dau, (13) Tailoress, born Somerset, Taunton; Wm. Callicott, Son, (11), Haulier, born Somerset, Taunton. It seems probable that there is a mistake on the return and that Hannah was a Widow. In the 1871 Census, Hannah is a visitor at Wrington, Somerset and is recorded as a Widow aged 55 with the occupation of 'Nurse to Cottage Hospital'. |
