Biographical notes

The family lived in the Gardener's House at St Fagans Castle until Hugh's retirement in 1935. They then elected to live at Nice in the South of France. In 1940, when the Germans invaded France, they decided with many other expatriates to return to the UK. This was exceedingly difficult because of the limited number of boats available which were also vulnerable to enemy attack. In the end they managed to get a passage in a collier which meant travelling in exceedingly squalid conditions. This passage took place after that of their son Andrew who, suffering from Meningitis, had been evacuated in a hospital ship.

The found rented accommodation in London and returned to their beloved Nice after the war had ended in 1945. There they remained until Hugh's tragic death in 1947. Alice returned to live in London where she remained until her death in 1960.
