Biographical notes

According to Spaxton marriage transcription, William was from the neighbouring parish of Over Stowey. Children known from the baptism and burial entries in the Spaxton parish registers and also the 1841 and later Census returns. In the 1841 Census William Hill has died and the remaining members of the family are living at Spaxton; Sarrah Hill, (60), y [Born in Somerset]; Andrew Hill, 20 [inferred to be Sarah's son, actual age about 26], Carpenter, y [Born in Somerset]; Mary Hill, 20 [inferred to be either Sarah's daughter or Andrew's wife], y [Born in Somerset]; Ann Hill, 8 [identity unknown], y [Born in Somerset]; James Hill, 30, [inferred to be Sarah's son, actual age about 35], Agricultural Labourer, y [Born in Somerset]; Eliza Hill, 40 [inferred to be James's wife], y [Born in Somerset].

By 1851 both Sarah and Andrew had died but the family of James Hill was still in Spaxton and can be traced through all succeeding Census entries to 1881. Mary Hill and Ann Hill have not been traced in the 1851 or later Census records.
